I have several approaches to art, none of them based in political, religious, or social statements. Depending on what I'm working on, it can be all about color, all about composition, or all about the details. Either way, it's mostly to please myself. Yes, it's all about me!
Seriously, I think of art as something to be enjoyed by the viewer. I apply what attracts me to a painting, whether it's the color combinations used, an interesting way of looking at a subject, or fantastic details. It's only been recently that I've actually broken away from detailed paintings to try to loosen up. Hence my foray into watercolor. I'm working on wet-on-wet as well as direct application of the pigment onto the paper, with only the brush being wet enough to push the paint around. It surprises some that it's water-color and not gauche.
